Jeff Hooper's Swing Soul, Rock n Roll Show
Born in Llantrisant, South Wales, Jeff launched his career after winning ITVs New Faces at the age of fourteen.
He went on to appear in a variety of TV shows, gaining a recording contract with EMI and a place in the charts with his debut single.
Travelling to America he performed at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas – home of the ‘Rat Pack.’
On his return to the UK Jeff joined the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, remaining for a decade as lead singer, touring the length and breadth of the country, Europe and worldwide. Appearing in major venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall, there followed regular recordings for radio and TV.
During this time he worked with the great Matt Monro who taught him how to play poker and tie a bow tie!!
With his perfect intonation, remarkable enunciation and articulation, Jeff has represented Britain and the BBC three times in the International Festivals of Song in Denmark, Yugoslavia and Holland.
Jeff’s enduring quality is a breathtaking baritone voice, a classic sound, with a magnetism, which has survived the changing trends. With his effortlessly engaging wit he continues to showcase the classic swing sounds, exerting a powerful grip on his audiences.
His work is prolific. Continuing his career with the BBC Big Band alongside writing and presenting a weekly programme ‘Bandwagon’ for Radio Wales, Jeff secured interviews with both Tony Bennett and Jack Jones. Regular broadcasts followed on ‘Big Band Special’ and ‘Friday Night is Music Night.’
In 1992 he toured Britain with his own Band, its success leading to a six-week series on Radio 2
One of the highlights of Jeff’s career was a tour of Mexico with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – incorporating The BBC Big Band; they played to ‘full to capacity ‘stadiums.
Along with his many solo cabaret appearances and performing with his own Jazz trio, Jeff runs his own Big Band and has recently performed with the Woody Herman Orchestra at The Celtic Manor Resort and appeared at Gala concerts with Katherine Jenkins and Charlotte Church.
He is proud to have been a part of the Remembrance Concert at St David’s Hall in 1995 where the late Diana Princess of Wales joined his fan club!
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall attended a service at Cardiff’s Coopers field to mark 60 years since the end of World War 2. This special concert was televised, starring Jeff and his Big Band, Katherine Jenkins and Aled Jones.
At the official opening of the National Assembly of Wales 1999 Jeff sang alongside Sir Tom Jones and Dame Shirley Bassey.
He was invited to make a guest appearance on BBC TVs Eastenders, where he sang ‘The Very Thought Of You’ during the episode and the credits.
He performs with some of Britain’s finest musicians and has an extensive musical library, ranging from the swing era, standards, classic, jazz, contemporary and pop, providing any size band to suit any occasion.
Jeff plays to full and enthusiastic audiences, delivering complete musicality, with his unique style and versatility. His selection of music provides rhythmic energy, where he connects with the occasion, for a thoroughly entertaining time!
He has sung on many worldwide television commercials including Jeep, Skoda, Volkswagen and McDonalds.
In July 2014 he was invited to perform at the after-show parties for Monty Python and Robbie Williams at the 02 Arena
Along with Jeff’s solo appearances at home and abroad, he enjoys travelling and performing on luxury cruise liners, including all “The Queens” of the Cunard fleet.
His success on the high seas led to performing on QE2’s final voyage alongside Dame Shirley Bassey and Des O’Connor.
He is the ultimate professional, dedicated to his art. His flawless diction and great musical instinct means he takes a classic and makes it ‘his own’. This ensures he is in much demand at all the great venues, such as Ronnie Scott’s famous Jazz club in London.
His skill continues to receive rhapsodic reviews for his distinctive voice, vibrant feel and his orchestral palette, validating what music is supposed to be.
